FDF Response to Government's Childhood Obesity Plan Chapter 2

Tim Rycroft, FDF Director of Corporate Affairs, said:
“Less than two years ago, the Government published a plan to tackle childhood obesity that it describes as ‘world leading’. At the heart of that plan was a highly ambitious and comprehensive programme to reformulate food and drink. FDF member companies are fully engaged with this programme which provides flexibility for manufacturers to decide how best to reduce sugar and calorie consumption amongst children, whether that is through changing recipes, limiting portion size or through promoting and advertising healthier options – something manufacturers have been doing for over a decade.

“The Government has come forward with a new raft of proposals centred around further industry regulation.  While the commitment to full consultation on these measures is welcome, there will be deep disquiet in the food and drink manufacturing sector today. Advertising and promotions underpin the healthy, vibrant and innovative market for food and drink that UK shoppers love. If Government restricts our ability to advertise and promote new healthier options to shoppers, it could risk the success of the reformulation programme.  Any further restrictions will have to pass stern tests around targeting and effectiveness.”
